Island Life started when I lived in a warehouse in Emeryville in 2001. Glamorous it was not - I had a little cave-like room within a much larger space and a healthy population of rats. The rent was cheap-ish, the housemates were cool and we had a big open party every six weeks. This was explained to me when I moved in, but it didn't occur to me then how quickly six weeks can go by. And what if I DON'T want a huge party and deejays and people dancing long into the night when I have to work in the morning? It was, at least, not boring.
I had a little Boss multi-track recorder there, and I made a swirly drum loop one morning which spoke to me about waves and palm trees swaying in a lazy breeze. It was as far from where I was at the time as it could be, and this indeed is one of the powers of music, of art, of creating. You can put yourself basically anywhere that you might choose to imagine.
SO many years later - over 20 years later, I re-recorded the vocals, added bass and guitar, engaged Michael Urbano to add drums, and Paul Jackson to add keyboards and tropical spices. 'Twas journey within a journey within a journey, this song.
Turn up the youth
lyrics
ISLAND LIFE
I’ve been workin' late on Friday night
And I'm goin' in on Caturday
I’ve been thinkin' bout the island light
As another summer peels away
Hanging in this curtain
Grey skies over urban
Lately my mind’s been wanderin’
To where the horizon shoulda been
Touch, but I can’t be certain,
Where it all ends I start again,
Let’s blow it off
I wanna get away
I wanna hear some music
I wanna hear ya sing
All the world’s an island, life is free
Half a million friends, but I’m lonely
As the glaciers fall and raise the sea
Won’t you save some island life for me?
Why can’t we all just live in peace?
Sometimes I break down in the morning and cry
Scream out in the night
Only to realize
There’s nothing in the world we can’t do
Anything we set our minds to
Maybe someday I won’t always be alone
Hanging in this curtain
Grey skies over urban
Lately my mind’s been wanderin'
Right over the silver lining
South, to the blue shining
A postcard sent home to mom
All the world’s an island, life is free
Every day looks still more crazy
Greta sailed the wide and open sea
For to save some island life for she
For we
Turn up the youth
Speaking the truth
OK Boomer, Generation X
Turn up the elders in the mix
Everything louder than everything else
OK fine, Generation why
Turn up the youth
Turn up the youth
