It Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer

about

I always found the screen message on older Windows machines strangely poetic: "It is now safe to turn off your computer." Well, boy howdy, thanks, 'puter! This weekend I riffed on the idea over some drum tracks recycled from an earlier song (can you spot which one?), sped and snipped to fit, and I recorded these lines as they came to me. I enjoyed the result and decided not to add any bass or other instruments as I had originally intended. It has a kind of "poetry slam" thing going on with just drums and vocs, and somehow the chords are implied by the melodies. So it's done! There's also a video at Internet Archive featuring screengrabs of the track visualization in my Pro Tools session, and a cameo of yours truly.

lyrics

It Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer

Some say they know what to do
It is now safe to turn off your computer
I'm late, but I'm a believer
Happy like a Golden Retriever
I might come down off the roof
I don't know, perhaps I'm a Diva
Backstage is catnip organic
We don't like any M&Ms
Can't find the stage door, running down the hall
Grandma's knitting as she waits for the curtain call
Telephone the manager, I want to speak to Karen
And Becky, and Eminem, at Eleven

But I digress, Spın̈al Tap is a reality show
And grandpappy's tuned into the punk retro
But the Golden Age of Golden Ages is done
Shredded culture like stale lettuce on a bun
Happy to be here, eat on the run
There is nothing new under the salamander
Coriander

Some say they know what to do
It is now safe to turn off your computer
I'm late, so how do you do?
It is now safe to turn off your computer
We used to knock on the door
But we don't do that anymore

The lunatics have taken over Main Street
And we're hiding in the asylum
Listen to the bells fall down from the tower
Corruption is just Tuesday now
As it ever was

They say they know what to do
It is now safe to turn off your computer
They say they know what to do
It is now safe to turn off your computer
